Our mission statement is “The Global Corner provides opportunities for the children of Northwest Florida to learn about world languages, cultures, and geography through innovative, educational programs.” We believe that in order to prepare students for success in the world, they need global competence. This has been described as a combination of international awareness, appreciation of cultural diversity, proficiency in foreign languages, and competitive skills. The Global Corner provides opportunities for students to gain three of the four.

No – or as we like to say, “Not yet.” The Global Corner is a Northwest Florida non-profit organization that was created by Lee Hansen, based on her realization that many Americans don’t know much about the rest of the world – and that schools have actually decreased the amount of time spent on geography and social studies. Although a great fan of math, science, and engineering – she realized that as the world “shrinks” it’s important to be able to understand and communicate with others. The Global Corner helps to create a community that is globally competitive. Fortunately, there have been many people in this community who have supported the idea.

The Global Corner provides a Passport Program, summer camp programs, and after-school language programs. The Passport Program focuses on a different country each school year and provides a half-day “virtual adventure” for elementary school students in Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties. The program includes an introduction and five separate activities. Every Passport Program will teach the students about the Culture, Music & Dance, History, Art, Nature & Animals, Celebrations, and People of the destination they travel to. Students receive a ‘passport’ that is stamped for each activity and contains words and phrases in the language of the respective destination.

Summer camps are conducted in conjunction with UWF’s Explore Summer program.

6-week after-school country programs started in 2022 and provide students with language and culture immersion.

We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We charge just $5.00 per student for the half-day program in public schools. This covers about ½ of our costs. The remainder is funded through sponsorships, donations, and grants.

Donations are accepted at any time. Whether you would like to sponsor a school ($6000) or one student ($10), give us a call at 850-332-6404 or click on the Donate buttons to give online.

If you would like to join us as a volunteer, we can use your skills to prepare lessons, create nametags for students, or help behind the scenes at fundraising events. Give us a call!

We also need materials for displays – items from our focus countries and pictures of the country for use in our displays and on our website. We can also use materials like pencils, markers, blank nametags and other consumables that are needed for our Passport Program. Call 850-332-6404

Our program serves schools in the Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties.

Availability is limited, and classroom visits can only be scheduled by a school teacher, faculty member, administrator or principal.

If you are a parent, we encourage you to share this website with your child’s teacher, get involved or donate.
